There
were a lot of sprint cars laying dormant around the island until Norm
Wilcox and Ross Rockett came up with the idea in 1995, to return these
cars to their original stature.
The catchy
(and fitting) name of WILROC was proposed by former super stock champion
Ross Surgenor. Wilcox and Rockett had also created the popular old time
stockcars in 1978 with Dave Ireland.
Their first
year at Western Speedway in 2000 was a tremendous success. The opening
race saw 10 cars on hand and by years end, the field had increased to
16.
With the
high interest shown by the fans, WILROC continues to grow and prosper,
and the co-founders see it as becoming the premier racecar class on
Vancouver Island.
